HIDs multiCLASS range of contactless card readers are well-positioned as upgrade vehicles for businesses who already have a legacy magstripe or proximity setup.

In particular, those who want to upgrade to more advanced 13.56 MHz smart cards, but want to keep the upgrade as simple and as painless as possible will find multiCLASS cards an excellent choice.

With a removable magstripe, once your upgrade is complete you can take off the less-secure magstripe backplate and replace it with a standard backplate once the migration has been completed.

The RM40, in particular, is the entry-level multiCLASS reader, in that it does not include support for HID Prox or include a keypad. If these are not required in your business, then it would be the best choice in the multiCLASS range, otherwise seek out the other card readers in the multiCLASS range.

Coming in Wiegand or Clock-and-Data options, the RM40 supports virtually all legacy card systems. With support for 13.56 MHz smart cards, notably HID iCLASS cards, the RM40 is great step up. All iCLASS 15693 cards are supported; government FIPS-301, MIFARE and DESFire too.

For the magstripe facilities, cable distance can be up to 500 feet, magnetic cards can have one or two tracks, and even most Dorado formats are supported.

With all of these abilities, the RM40 multiCLASS reader is a versatile workhorse. If you currently use a magstripe setup but want to upgrade to a 13.56 MHz setup and dont require the use of a keypad or HID Prox, the RM40 is your best option.
